This scorpion is scary, but not as scary as public speaking.

This scorpion is scary, but not as scary as public speaking.

Are you afraid to speak in public?

If you’re like me, I’ll bet you enjoy chatting with a friend over a cup of tea. I’ll bet you enjoy small gatherings where the conversation is flowing freely and you can listen or join in as the fancy takes you. And if you’re like me, I’ll bet that the thought of doing a presentation as you stand in front of a room full of strangers makes your stomach do a bellyflop.

Perhaps you’re a trifle surprised that I admit to feeling nervous when I give a speech? You might ask yourself “is the blog of a self professed public speaking expert?”

Well, I’ve been speaking in public both for fun, and as part of my career, for ten years, and I still feel nervous. I don’t expect the nerves to ever go away. I’ve come to realise, I don’t want the nerves to vanish. When I employ the right techniques, my feeling of fear actually drives energy into my speech. My terror helps me make every presentation I do more dynamic, more entertaining, and more engaging for the audience.

Public speaking is a skill that can help you tangibly in your career. So many job adverts list amongst the requirements communication skills and teamwork. No doubt at work, you’ve been asked to give a speech, or more often, just a few impromptu words in front of the team. Learning to manage your fear, structure your speech so you sound as intelligent as you are, and present your speech like you know what you’re talking about is vital to get and keep your job.

I believe that public speaking is a skill that we can all learn. And that’s why I’m offering you a chance to put your name down to get my weekly newsletter of communication tips.
